Today’s young business professionals and undergraduate students require communication, collaboration, creativity, and critical thinking skills. They need to be able to develop and leverage professional networks using social media tools in the service of both professional and organizational goals. Above all, they need experience adapting to new technologies and responding in creative ways to situated problems.
As a means of preparing students for these challenges, BCOM Commons and Dr. Anders’s Business Communications courses provide a gateway online experience for students. Through participatory learning activities, students will share resources, publish example communications work, and develop a foundational online presence. Going even further, these online activities are designed to facilitate networking experiences and interactions with real-world professionals, LSBE alumni, and potential employers. The BCOM Commons project including a technology-enhanced course redesign of FMIS 3141: Business Communications has been generously supported by a Chancellor’s Cabinet Strategic Grant from the University of Minnesota Duluth. The project also received support from the University of Minnesota Office of Information Technology Faculty Fellowship Program. BCOM Commons is built on the Commons in a Box software package and platform for WordPress blogging sites.
